2. und 3. Etappe

gestern waren wir ja noch ein bissle im Planungsstreß für die heutige
Etappe, daher gab's noch keinen Ergebnisdienst. Die 2. Etappe von
Lenzerheide nach Arosa wurde ja Aufgrund der extremen Wetterverhältnisse
zwar gestartet, aber fließt nicht in die Gesamtwertung mit ein. Es gab
verschiedene Optionen, wie man die Etappe fahren konnte....

Option A: Zwischen Lenzerheide und Chur so viele Punkte wie möglich zu
sammeln und dann mit dem Zug von Chur nach Arosa
Option B: Mit dem Rad von Lenzerheide über das Churer Joch und die
Ochesenalp nach Arosa
Option C: Mit dem Rad direkt nach Chur und dem Zug weiter nach Arosa

Für die Varianten A&B gabs eine Tageswertung. Wir waren eins von 8 Teams
die Variante B gefahren sind. 2 Teams haben noch die Lenzerheide Freeride
Abfahrt extra gemacht (wir nicht), die waren somit in der Tageswertung vor
uns. Wir haben dafür die Spurarbeit durch den Schnee übernommen, waren also
als erste in Arosa... aber eben ohne den Umweg über die Freeride Strecke...
Der Tag hat dennoch mächtig Spaß gemacht - und zählte ja ohnehin nicht in
die Wertung.

Abends dann Briefing für Etappe 3 von Arosa nach Davos. Wir hatten ja schon
überlegt, ob ggf der ein oder andere Pass rausgenommen wird, da oben
immernoch gut 15-20cm Schnee lagen. Die Schweizer sind da aber ganz
entspannt.... die Etappe war ganz normal freigegeben.

Von Arosa nach Davos standen 2 Übergänge zur Auswahl. Der Duranapass und
der Strelapass. Für beide sind einige Höhenmeter bergauf zu überwinden
(Duarana ca 800hm, Strela ca 1000hm). Wir haben abends lange überlegt,
welchen Übergang wir nehmen sollen.... haben uns dann für den Durana Pass
entschieden. Auf der Basis haben wir eine schöne Tour geplant und sind 6h
über geniale Singletrails gefahren (mit 2x Gotschnabahn Einsatz). Wir waren
als Erste auf dem Pass und als erste am Checkpoint. Unterwegs sind dann die
Gesamt-Zweiten auf uns aufgefahren, die 7 min nach uns gestartet sind - die
Jungs sind auch echt fit..... wir dachten also, dass wir heute genial im
Rennen lagen.

Insgesamt sind wir heute 7. geworden - die Variante über den Strela-Pass
hat doch insgesamt ein paar Punkte mehr ergeben.... das gehört eben beim
GrischaTrail auch dazu - die optimale Routenplanung.

In der Gesamtwertung haben wir den 8. Platz erreicht und sind damit sehr
zufrieden.

Jetzt sitzen wir im Auto auf dem Heimweg und sind noch ganz begeistert von
der ganzen Aktion. Eigentlich dachten wir, dass wir an den 3 Tagen ein paar
gemütliche Trails runterfahren. Insgesamt ist es aber eher so, dass man
sich seinen persönlichen Marathon auf extrem genialen Singletrails
zusammenstellt.... und das über 6 h am Tag - non Stop - Vollgas. Wir sind
auch ggü dem, was wir dachten sehr viel mehr bergauf gefahren....

Das war sicherlich die beste MTB Veranstaltung, die wir je mitgemacht haben
und wir sind sicher in 3 Tagen noch nie so viele Trails gefahren - der
Trailanteil war bestimmt 80/90% - das macht so ca. 70km Trails am
Tag :-))))) Da werden wir sicherlich nächstes Jahr wieder angreifen......
und die Transalp sieht uns nimmer...... denn unser neues Motto... es gibt 3
Sachen, die der Mann mal gemacht haben muß: Nummer 1 haben wir vergessen,
Nummer 2 fällt uns auch grad nicht ein und Nummer 3 --> einmal TRAIL-KING
of the Day beim GrischaTrailride zu sein ;-)

soo..... das Briefing ist vorbeiund damit gibts auch die Ergebnisliste. Wir
hatten ja 1720 Punkte eingesamelt - das macht Platz 9... ganz OK für das
erste Mal.... Das Siegerteam hat heute 500 (fünfhundert) Punkte mehr
zusammengefahren.... ganz schön fix die Burschen. Das heisst, dass wir noch
bissle an unserer Routenwahl arbeiten müssen.... die Trail Sektionen für
Morgen sind bekannt ... jetzt gehts ans Puzzel.....

Sind gut angekommen

Zuerst die wichtigste Info. Kein Sturz, keine Panne, alles bestens. Wir
hatten einen geilen Tag auf den Trails zwischen Davos und Surava. Insgesamt
haben wir 1720 Punkte zusammengefahren. Platzierung unbekannt.

Aber der Reihe nach.

Nach Start in Davos an der Eishalle (wir sind um 09:02 los) sind wir ja als
erstes mit den ganzen Verrückten auf die Parsenn Bahm. Abfahrt 09:15. Wir
waren dabei... un umringt von den ganzen Fully-Protektoren-Jungs... die
wieder bissle iritiert unsere Bikes angesehen haben.. aber gesagt hat
keiner was.

Der Trail von der Parsenn-Mittelstation runter war mit der max
Schwierigkeit bewertet ... wir wollten mal sehen, wo wir uns so
einzusortieren haben. Aus der Bahn raus, sind wir dann als 2. Team in den
Trail. Bei einem kurzen Verbremser von Hendrik hat uns das Team hinter uns
überholt, aber war immer so in Sichtweite, auch das Team das vorne gefahren
ist. Die konnten übrigends die Spitzkehren umsetzen - wir müssen da noch
bissle dran feilen. ABer schnell waren wir dennoch. Die anderen ca 10 Teams
hinter uns sind nicht an uns ran gekommen. Das war gut zum einfahren.

Danach sind wir zur Jakobshorbahn, wo wir die 2 Teams vor uns grad wieder
eingesammelt haben. An der Bahn angekommen konnten wir gleich die Berfahrt
nehmen - super Timing :-). Danach mussten/durften wir ca 600hm bergauf
fahren .... da haben wir dann noch ein paar Teams eingesamelt, die sich
eine andere Routenwahl zurecht gelegt hatten. Bergauf ging das ganz flott.
Aber auch bergab lief es dann super. Da haben wir noch ein paar Jungs
getroffen. Einer der Vollintegralhelmfraktion hat sich dann unten bei uns
entschuldigt, dass er ja leider für uns zu langsam war, er aber keinen
Platz machen konnte - das war echt der knüller. Danach haben wir - entgegen
der anderen Teams noch einen Schlenker mit 200-300hm bergauffahrt eingebaut
- war super.... außerdem dachten wir, dass wir noch eeeeeewig Zeit
hätten......

Zurück in Davos sind wir dann auf schnellstem Weg Richtung Rinerhirn-Bahn.
Dort war die Verpflegungsstation und ein Check-Point. Von dort wollten wir
eigentlich mit der Bahn rauf und noch eine Runde über Sertig Dörfli
einbauen, haben aber beschlossen, dass dafür die Zeit zu knapp wird.
Stattdessen haben wir für den Weiterweg nach Surava eine 300 Punkte
Variante gewählt - die hatte auch noch ein paar Hundert bergauf Höhenmeter
und am Ende waren wir ganz schön platt. Landschaftlich war das aber einer
der schönsten Wege und der Trail war echt super. Das sind hier eigentlich
alle Trails, wobei einige schon recht knifflig zu fahren sind :-)

Unsere Routenwahl heute war eher ein selbst zusammen gebastelter Marathon.
Gefühlt sind wir sehr viel bergauf gefahren. Insgesamt waren wir 5:50
unterwegs - mit nur 2 kurzen Bergbahn Pausen. Wir mussten insgesamt ganz
schön Gas geben, um den Zeitplan einzuhalten. Je 5 min Verspätung gibts 50
Punkte Abzug :-((. Jetzt sind wir ganz schön platt ... bgefühlt wie nach
einer langen Transalp-Etappe..... vieleicht hätten wir die letzten 4 Wochen
doch noch bissle trainingstechnisch am Ball bleiben sollen......

Später gibts noch ein paar Details zur genauen Route und die offizielle
AUswertung. Rider Briefing ist heute Abend irgendwann......

und ggf noch 1,2,3 Bilder des Tages ... wobei wir echt eigentlich keine
Zeit zum fotografieren hatten... voller Streß hier....

Gestartet - Parsenn Bahn

wir sind gestartet und stehen mit unseren hardtails neben vielen fullys in
der parsenn bahn. das ist technisch eine der schwersten sektionen - dann
wissen wir gleich mal wo wir stehen ;-)

als bonus trail ist ein abschnitt eingebaut zu dem man erst 600hm rauf muß
- den nehen wir mit :-)))

Erstes Briefing Überstanden

.. nach der Startnummernausgabe (wir haben Nummer 23) hat heute also das
Briefing zur ersten Etappe stattgefunden. Wir müssen feststellen, dass wir
ziemlich ahnungslos sind... und mal gespannt sind, wie das morgen so läuft.

Wir haben heute eine Karte bekommen, in der Trails eingezeichnet sind.
Insgesamt sind das 180km zwischen dem Startpunkt in Davos und dem Ziel in
der Nähe von Lenzerheide. Die kann man natürlich nicht alle in der
vorgegebenen Zeit von 6h fahren .... man muss sich also eine Route
zusammenstellen. Die einzelnen Trailabschnitte geben je nach Länge und
Schwierigkeit Punkte. Dazu kommt noch, dass ein "Special Trail" am Tag die
doppelte Punktzahl gibt - den erfährt man aber erst beim Start. Alles in
Allem recht kompliziert, und es kommt hinzu, dass wir Ahnungslosen
natürlich nicht so recht wissen, wie lange man eigentlich für welche Trails
braucht. ... ???? ..... Jetzt haben wir mal einen groben Plan
zusammengestiefelt, aber unser Gefühl sagt uns, dass warscheinlich nach der
ersten Stunde der Plan völlig über den Jordan geht ... schaun mer mal...
als ersten Trail wollen wir mal einen fahren, der mit der höchsten
Schwierigkeit ausgezeichnet ist --- dann weiß man wenigstens mal wo man
steht :-)

Jetzt sitzt Hendrik noch da und notiert sich die Wanderweg-Nummern zu den
Trails, die wir rausgesucht haben, damit wir uns grob orientieren können.
Ich check noch die Mails des Tages und dann ist finito...

Morgen gehts dann los. Unsere Startgruppe started im Zeitfenster von
9:00-9:30. Wir wollen genau um 9:00 starten, um die 9:15 Parsenn-Bahn zu
schnappen..... Bis dahin wünschen wir Allen mal ne gute Nacht :-)

..... wir haben es natürlich bei dem schönen Wetter nicht lassen können und
sind noch eine Runde "eingefahren" .... mit der Parsenn Bahn auf das
Weissfluhjoch und dann über schöne Trails bergauf/bergab zurück nach
Davos...

Um 19:30 startet das Briefing, schaun mer mal...

In der Parsenn Bahn waren eir heute schon die vollen Exoten. Wir waren
umringt von Vollintegralhelmüberallprotektorenfullyfahrern, die unsere
Hardrails echt belächelt haben..... wir kamen uns echt komisch vor.

Die "schwarzen" Trails sind wir dennoch gut runter gekommen :-)

Ab morgen geht es also los in Richtung Davos zum Grischa Trail Ride
2011 ...... wir werden diesmal versuchen den Blog ausführlich zu füttern,
damit miterlebt werden kann, wie sich Racer mit Hardtails bei einem
Freeride Event schlagen. Wir (Hendrik und Roman) sind schon ein bissle
nervös ;-)

Hi Leute, Transalp Mitstreiter, und Begleiter,

bin wie alle anderen wieder zuhause, und versuche das Erlebte zu verdauen, morgen gehts wieder ins Geschäft und der Alltag hat uns wieder aber die TAC 2011 wird uns wohl alle in Erinnerung bleiben und vermutlich die Tage mit den schlechten Wetterverhältnissen ganz im Besonderen. Bevor ich aber ein paar Erlebnisse berichte, möchte ich ein ganz herzliches Dankeschön an unsere Begleiter richten. Gerlinde und Petra, Begleiter vom Team Freilauf Filder, Kirsten und Jennifer vom Team North Atlantic MTB, Nobbe vom Team HappyChain Masters und natürlich meine liebe Barbara vom Team HappyChain Senior Masters, die Unterstützung war super, Ihr habt alle einen großen Anteil am letztendlich guten Gelingen unserer TAC 2011. TAC steht übrigens für Tansalp Challenge.

Ich bin schwer beeindruckt von meinen Freunden, Roman und Hendrik haben sich fast jeden Tag selbst übertroffen und am Ende war ein Platz unter den ersten 10 fast in Reichweite, die zwei fahren wie der Teufel.

Bei Roman und Hendrik wussten ja alle das die es können, das war bei Annette und Utz nicht der Fall, hier waren wir alle gespannt wie die zwei die MTB Belastungen und hier insbesondere die Abfahrten wegstecken würden. Sie haben uns gezeigt, dass man auch als eher Rennradfahrer und Triathlet die TAC bewältigen kann, natürlich nur, wenn man wie die zwei im Vorfeld intensives MTB Training absolviert hat. Auf jeden Fall ziehe ich den Hut vor Annette und Utz, eine Superleistung.

Und da war noch ein zweites Senior Master Team, Steven aus USA und Peter aus Kempten, ein paar Mal haben Sie uns geknackt und wenn sie nicht eher verhalten gestartet wären, wäre es wohl zwischen den beiden und Ricci und mir noch richtig eng geworden.

Nun zu uns, zum HappyChain Senior Master Team. Wir, Ricci und ich, haben uns wie schon im letzten Jahr intensiv auf den sportlichen Höhepunkt im Jahr 2011, vorbereitet. Allerdings fehlten uns wetterbedingt ein paar Höhenmeter im Vergleich zum letzten Jahr, hat uns aber nicht wirklich Sorge bereitet, wir haben einfach gesagt, zuviel ist auch nicht gut.

Ein Blick auf das Starterfeld hat mir aber im Vorfeld schon gezeigt, dass es dieses Jahr vermutlich schwerer wird eine gute Platzierung zu erreichen, es waren 10 Senior Master Team mehr am Start als letztes Jahr, knapp 50 Teams. Einige starke Master Teams von 2010 hatten nun das Senior Master Alter erreicht und waren am Start.

Ricci und ich hatten vereinbart das Rennen etwas verhalten zu beginnen, so war das Ergebnis am ersten Tag mit Platz 17 auch in etwa entsprechend unseren Erwartungen. Eigentlich ist die Rechnung, uns nicht an den ersten Tagen vollends aus zu powern, damit wir noch Potential zum Steigern haben, ganz gut aufgegangen. Na ja, eigentlich gilt die Taktik nur für mich, bei Ricci wäre es jeden Tag noch etwas schneller gegangen, aber so ist das nun Mal bei einem Team Rennen, mit gehangen, mit gefangen oder nur gemeinsam sind wir stark oder wie auch immer.

Unsere guten Platzierungen haben wir auch heuer wieder bei den längeren Etappen erzielt, und Regen und Kälte, legt uns auch nicht so.

Das Endergebnis, der 13. Platz, geht aber voll in Ordnung und ich habe mich dieses Jahr während der ganzen Woche wesentlich besser gefühlt als letztes Jahr, hatte nicht morgens schon schwere Beine, sondern erst abends. Die Schlechtwetter-Etappen haben mir schon (uns) ziemlich

zugesetzt, erstaunlich aber, dass wir am nächtsen Tag wieder recht frisch und gut gelaunt im Startblock standen. Den Startblock haben wir übrigens fast täglich gewechselt, mal waren wir in C, mal wieder in B, gegen Ende hin haben wir uns dann in B etabliert. Die magische Grenze ist bei den Senior Masters oder auch "Alte Säcke" genannt der 15. Platz, ab Platz 16 gehts nach hinten in den dritten von vier Startblöcken. Von Stürzen bin ich dieses Jahr leider auch nicht verschont geblieben, das erste Mal hat es mich am ersten Tag bei bei der Abfahrt vom Plumsjoch, eine steile rutschige Schotterstrasse, vom Rad geholt, bis auf eine kleine Schramme an der Nase ist aber nix passiert und Zeit hats auch kaum gekostet.

Der letzte Tag war da schon heftiger, zuerst bei Tempo 30 - 40 ein Abgang in die Wiese, der ist aber ohne größere Blessuren verlaufen. Dann bei der letzten Trailabfahrt, nasse rutschige Steine und mein Vorderrad gehorchte nicht mehr meinen "Steuerkünsten", ich bin mit voller Wucht auf Oberschenkel und Schulter gekracht. Im ersten Augenblick dachte ich "das wars". Nach vielleicht 10 Minuten bin ich dann wieder auf Rad mit gehörig Schiss bei den letzten Metern der Abfahrt, danach gings noch in einen Anstieg, einer Asphaltabfahrt und ca. 20km in der Ebene nach Riva. Weiß bis jetzt nicht wie ich es geschafft habe da noch mal voll in die Pedale zu treten, seit ich in Riva vom Rad gestiegen bin humpele ich mehr schlecht als recht durch die Gegend und mein rechter Oberschenkel war auch schon mal schöner.

Die letzten Meter nach Riva waren für mich aber sehr emotional, ich war am absoluten Limit und am Schnaufen wie ein Walross, Ricci hatte mich immer wieder geschoben. Dann kam von hinten ein Spanischer Teilnehmer angerauscht, der muss wohl auf den ersten Blick erkannt haben wie dreckig es mir ging, jedenfalls hat mich der dann auf der rechten Seite geschoben und gleichzeitig auf mich eingeschrien " Go Go Go, You are great, You will make it" und was weiß ich nicht alles, das muss ein Bild für die Götter gewesen sein, wie wir da zu dritt durch die Straßen von Riva gedonnert sind. Im Ziel war ich dann total am Ende und doch ziemlich ergriffen. Den Spanischen Sportler kannte ich 10 Minuten vorher noch nicht und im Ziel haben wir uns alle in Armen gelegen. DAS IST SPORT.

Am Meisten habe ich mich natürlich gefreut meine Barbara zu umarmen und ich glaub auch Sie war froh uns alle "wohlauf" in Riva zu empfangen.

Stage 6 Alleghe to San Martino, 44 miles, 10344'

Highway to Hell… bla bla bla… there are 10 high points on this stage which makes it interesting, lots of up and down. It is amazing how many riders
vary their output, pushing hard up steep sections and backing off on the easier grades…. constant effort is usually the most productive on long
climbs. We pass groups after a few yo-yo moves, we glide past them on the easier grades, maybe standing in a big gear and pedaling softly, they
glare at us, then they push past on the hard stuff, and after a few of these they are off the back, it is a lot of fun. Even though we are not near
the front of the race, there is always competition, just great. We are on some undulating gravel road with six members of the Craft team in front of
us, they all push hard when it is steep and recover when it is easier, so I pull quickly past them on a flat. A girl in the group does not like
that, and fly's by me on the next steep section, blonde ponytail sticking out her helmet , followed by her male teammate, he can't hang and drops
back, I relax and figure I will pass her on the next easy section. The next easy section comes and as I am advancing quickly, but she drops into
some single track, now I am stuck behind miss blonde ponytail for a while, at least the view is good. When it opens I move up and regroup with
Peter, and the Craft group is off the back. At 4 hours we have climbed 7000 feet, and have about 3500' to go, I recognize the area from my tour in
2007 with Roman, it is right at the foot of some of the Dolomites. We are riding on a road frequented by hikers, and there are plenty out today, and
racers are weaving through, plenty of chaos. I am trying to figure out how hard I can push this last section, when amidst the craziness, a family of
four lines up with their hands out, I go by, slap, slap, slap, slap, lots of cheers, it's great, I look at the mountains and remember why I am here,
it's just great country… especially when the weather is nice. We are working up the switchbacks when Peter says hey Franz and Ricci are up there,
some of the HappyChain team that are also Grand Masters, now is a chance to try and pass them. So I put on my climbing face and try to go as fast as
I can and still last, I stand, pedal softly and push my heart rate up to about 150, we still have about 1000' to go and I don't want to push too
hard, and I want to accelerate over the top. I reach them at the top, drop it into the biggest gear I have just before I pass them, sit and pretend
to do a stomp interval, I go by fast and head down the gravel road, which eventually turns to smooth pavement, it's raining and there is traffic
coming up, campers and cars, would be really fun if it was dry, need to be careful. Getting close to the finish we hit some very rough single
track, built especially for the race, and a few man made features, ramps and drops, I try to go fast but Franz and Ricci pass me… they are great
downhillers, we hit the road in the town… I hammer as hard as I can, there is a slight uphill near the end, good, that should slow them a little, I
catch up and we all go over the finish together, just great, everybody hanging on their bikes breathing heavy… 44 miles and 10344' vertical in
about 6 hours, 11th place for the day, Yahoo! Now go to the food tent, need to start refueling for tomorrow.

Stage 7 San Martino to Trento, 74 miles, 8541'

Highway to Hell blaring we are off for the 7th stage. The first section is a gravel road downhill with everybody packed together, very scary, the
group wants to move fast, lots of riders are passing, people crashing, people fixing flats everywhere, the motorcycle medic guy is working on
someone, after 35 minutes of brake clenching fun we head up a paved road and on to some single track and head off into the back country. I miss my
first gel pack feeding at 30 minutes, need to stay on schedule or I will run out of gas. At 2 hours we hit the first feeding station just before the
main climb (gel pack number 4), at 3 hours (gel pack #6) we are 2400 feet above the feeding station, not bad on any day in my book at a heart rate
of 135-140, need to save something for the 40 mile rolling dash to the finish. At 3 hours 40 we hit the top, way above tree line, lots of green
grass, cows, and mountain peaks all around. The decent is 25 minutes on a switchback gravel road, and 25 minutes of twisty road clinging to the side
of the valley, steeper that Petersburg Pass and very twisty with lots of "S" turns, riders are flying, traffic coming up and a guardrail on the
right. The view is incredible, the green valley stretches out far below us, it seems like it is taking a long time; I had forgotten it was just over
5000 feet down. By 4 hours 30 (gel pack #9, god I hate these things), we get organized on the bike path with a few other riders and are moving fast,
I am behind Peter most of the way, it is a 2-3% grade down. About 10 miles from town we hit a 500' climb (Gel pack #10), ok let's see what these gel
packs have left for me, I stand up pedal softly and we leave the group that has accumulated behind us, and pass a lot more on the way up, my heart
rate is 150 and I feel great. At the top Peter and I are alone (gel pack #11, I say that's it, no more, I don't care), I get behind him and we head
to town, I am drafting but we are not serious. At one kilometer we are overtaken by 4 riders, we are on a very busy road, and my back brake is not
working, they go by, and one team is a Grand Masters, pushing us back another place to 17th for the day, 75 miles 8541 feet in just about 6 hours.
I'm ok with that…. Trento is a big city with lots of old architecture… and we are right in the center… I eat, and eat, and eat….

Stage 8, Trento - to - Riva Del Ray, 45 miles, 7100'

Trento is a beautiful city with lots of old architecture, huge stone walls, fountains, and stone buildings. After Highway to Hell we snake through
the city, it's raining, traffic is backed up everywhere, lots of turns and obstacles on the sides of the road. Very scary considering the group is
tight and itching to go, lots of bumping tires and a few riders down. We start the first climb 3000' on a small paved road, very steep, I have to
work it even in the granny gear, turns to slippery single track, lots of people walking. From the top we descend a gravel road, of course there is a
groove from previous riders, stay in the groove, I am beginning to get the hang of it after 7 days, not many riders passing, I asked Roman about
people passing and his response was… he and Hendrik don't get passed… ever! At 11th place out of about 200 masters I guess they are fast, Roman was
my teammate in the 2005 TransAlp, and said to me after a few decents "come on steve…. there are chicks on hard-tails passing you", we still had a
good race, top 1/3rd. Surfing gravel at 40mph is not my thing. For the next 20 miles we are on rolling single track, linked together with the
occasional town (with people out and cheering) or farm, they did a great job putting this together, we are not on any main roads, but high on the
side of the valley, and the single track is great, lots of wet slippery rocks and roots. At one point I see miss blonde ponytail from the Craft team
way up ahead, Oh I have to pass her, and we have our NAV kits on again, great, but we get mixed up with other riders and I lose sight of her. We
are heading down a large valley to Riva Del Garda on Garda lake. We start the last climb, about 1500', on the right side of the valley and I wonder
where the hell we are going, the right side of the valley is a vertical rock face about 1000 feet high, extending down the valley as far as I can
see. Then I see it, an angled groove cut into the rock, extending up and out of sight, in a few minutes we are in that groove, just amazing, and we
can see lake Garda about 10 miles away.

I fixed my brake problem from the previous day, the pads were new at the start of the race, I just bought them, and now they are cooked, gone down
to the spring, quickest set of pads I ever went through (7 days). Glad they are fixed, I am going to need them.

We start the last big descent, a double track gravel road that gets very steep. In Italy, when these isolated double track roads get steep, they
pave them with rough concrete, pave is too good a word, I can hardly see the difference between gravel and concrete, but you can really hook-up on
rough concrete switchbacks and everybody wants to fly. Down, down we plunge into the valley for about 20 minutes, brakes don't fail me now, the
vegetation is grown in overhead and feels like we are in a tunnel, my hands are hurting, the concrete is interrupted periodically by cobble stone,
great… shake me to death, luckily the cobble stone is on the straight sections. At the bottom we are on an undulating bike path with lots of turns
for the next 7 miles or so. Peter is pulling most of the time and we are flying. The turns are tricky, it is hard to see, and I need to maintain my
speed to keep on the wheel of the bike in front of me, stay too close in a turn and I need to hit my brakes, then pedal like mad to catch up, I am
learning to leave a small gap going into a turn and sweep through without brakes, moving right back up to the bike in front, it's a real energy
saver. We develop quite a group behind us, probably 30 or more, some of the other teams are pulling, lots of fun…. then… there up ahead… its miss
blonde ponytail with one teammate, alright!, we go by like a freight train, two NAV kit guys at the front, take that… As we get near town there are
a few short climbs, maybe 100' or so, they really test the group, everybody stands and tries to go like hell, it's a good discriminator, and lots of
riders are off the back. When we hit the finish we are down to a group of 8 or so… just great… I am still on the gel-pack every ½ hour, it is
working great, I have not lost nearly as much weight as I did in my last TransAlp, and I feel great at each finish. 45 miles and 7100' vertical in
4 hours 30 minutes, 14th place out of 50 for the day, and 17th in the Grand Masters for the 8 days. Yahoo!

Time for a real beer or two, and there is a tent passing them out, real, large, German beers, was really good, went right to my head. Now I am in
the airport, hung over from 2 beers??I guess that after 8 days of fine tuning my constitution, eating a good dinner, the body is done with it by
6:30AM, racing on gels and sugar water, and starting recovery right at the end of each stage…. My body just did not respond well to swapping
recovery food for beer… even though I did eat well later….

Transalp vorbei....

Das war sie nun, die Transalp 2011. Irgendwie ist das immer ein sehr
komisches Gefühl, wenn die Woche zuende ist. Ich sitze jetzt im Büro und es
kommt einem etwas "unwirklich" vor. Der Körper ist noch auf 4h Hochleistung
eingestellt..... alles sehr komisch.

Nachdem dieses Jahr die Sache mit unserem Blog irgenwie überhaupt nicht
geklappt hat, dachte ich, ich schreibe mal einen "Abschlußbericht"... der
ist in arbeit... kann sich also nurnoch um Tage handeln....

Umd... ich hoffe, dass zu unserem nächsten Event der Blog wieder besser
funktioniert. Hendrik und ich sind beim Grischa Trail Ride 2011 am
Start..... nähere Infos dazu folgen in Kürze :-)

Also...... schaut noch ab-und-zu in den Blog rein.... es kommen noch ein
paar Blogs :-)

Hallo Happychain - und befreundete teams,

auch dieses Jahr hat es mir wieder Freude bereitet, euch im Blog und in der Ergebnisliste der Transalp zu verfolgen und so aus der Entfernung ein klein bisschen dabei zu sein.

Ich bewundere eure Leistung- das Wetter hat es euch wirklich nicht leicht genmacht.. und die Strecke sicher auch nicht.

Stevens Bericht ist Klasse und es wäre schön gewesen auch von den persönlichen Erlebnissen der anderen Fahrer/Fahrerin zu hören- da seid ihr leider sehr zurückhaltend.

,,,und alle gut abgeliefert. Steve sitzt mittlerweile auch im Flieger und
den anderen beiden anderen gehts auch gut. Franz, Ricci, Peter mit Familie
und Utz mit seinen Mädels sind noch in Riva geblieben und werden nun wohl
auch auf der Heimreise sein.
Und falls Roman nicht noch ein Abschlusswort beisteueren möchte dann wars
das für dieses Jahr. Sorry auch an alle von mir, das es diesmal nicht so
geklappt hat mit dem Blog...es gab und gibt da technische Probleme, die
unser EDV-Mann nicht so auf die husche beheben konnte.

Stage 4, Brixen - to – St. Vigil (Italy) 43 miles, 11443' vertical

To all you NAV (North American Velo) guys, meet our newest NAV member Dr. Peter Reissner, he is my teammate for the TransAlp, he is a PhD mathematician, and has developed risk management algorithms for interest rate options, and I thought mathematicians only worked in science and engineering. He is a hell of a biker and mountain marathon runner, he sometimes pushes me (legal in the TransAlp) during the race just to take the edge off, it's great. He lives with his wife Kirstin and daughter Jennifer in Bavaria Germany (Kirstin and Jennifer chase Peter around in the motor home for the race, we all camp together). Back to the race. Standing in the start line my heart rate is 58, day 1-3 were 110, 95, and 85, either I am dying or I am slowly adjusting to the routine. ACDC's Highway to Hell is blaring and we are off for another day frolicking in the Alps, we are paraded through town on a winding course, passing under old archways and Italian architecture. The first climb is 4400', starting out as a switchback road winding back and forth up the valley. We are packed together like sardines, but the crowd is well behaved and the view is great. We climb about 800' before hitting double track working its way up under the gondola, it becomes the granny gear climb from hell for a while, repeat the mantra "don't get off the bike", I am going as slow as I can and my heart rate is climbing and the legs are starting to burn, the group grinds on, two continuous rows of bikers climbing in complete silence, even the Italian's. At 1 hour we hit 2300', a new record for the trip, then 3000' at 1 hour 20 minutes, and the top 4400' in about 2 hours. Then the fun begins, we need to ride the ridge, with many up &down sections, lots of single track, some open and some in a pine forest, really great. The Dolomites loom in the distance, prehistoric looking, like giant dinosaur teeth pointed at the sky; we will be in the Dolomites for the next 4 days. After 8800' we begin the last 2600' climb, yesterday we would have been done, up a paved winding road, the view of the Dolomites is great, the sky is blue, what a day, legs get me to the finish. The road turns dirt and straight up the fall line, crawling in the granny gear, repeat the mantra "don't get off the bike", I pass a lot of riders walking but it is no use, I need to walk, on and off the bike for the next hour. I finally get to the top and Peter is not there, very unusual, I thought he was in front and he would not go down without me (we need to be within 2 minutes of each other at feeding stations and the finish, or they add 1 hour to your time, all electronically monitored something like an EasyPass is mounted behind my number). My water bottle cage is pulling one of the fittings out of the frame and I don't think it can make it to the bottom, so I pull out my trusty duct tape, don't leave home without it, and tape the cage to the frame, Peter is still not there. I wait another 5 minutes and think about going back and he comes up the trail, that's a relief, he took a wrong turn following a couple of misguided racers down the trail to nowhere, but he is here now let's go. The decent starts as a gravel road clinging to the mountain side, I can see the town about 2500' straight down, off the cliff on my right, a long way to go. We roll down the switchbacks, flying down the straights and skid into the turns, lots of water bars, don't want to hit one of those the wrong way, hikers pull their kids aside, we don't want to hit one of those either, the gondola remains overhead as we switch back and forth. The road turns to pavement, but only about 10 feet wide and the switchbacks are banked, really smooth fast descent, lots of fun, pass through a number of tunnels with ski trails overhead, hit town and the finish 6 hours 22 minutes, 43 miles and 11443 vertical, yahoo give me a sausage I'm hungry (we did eat something better). We got kicked back to 23^rd place in the Grand Masters (there were 50 starting teams), not bad considering our lost time.

Stage 5, St. Vigil –to- Alleghe, miles 44, ascent 8547 feet

The rain is pounding the camper roof, it is 6:30AM, and 45 degrees out. Forecast says it should start clearing by early afternoon. I decide to wear a long sleeve jersey and shorts, Pearl Izumi shell gloves which have done well in the past on cool wet days, and no booties, the rain is letting up and I am optimistic, I stuff 100 euros in my pocket. We drive to the start, rain beating on the windshield, it is silent in the camper, I say to Roman that it feels like we are on a prisoner's bus going to the work detail, he and Hedrick laugh and agree. We get there and nobody is in the "C" starting corral, I guess motivation is down, we are right up front, we will need it. The announcer is talking about snow again, on the first climb, and especially on the second which gets up to 7995'. They may end the race early at the second feeding station, saving us from the last 2100' ascent, and the weather up there. I am getting nervous, I leave comfort of a vendors booth to venture out in search of something else to wear, I find some 3/4 length rain pants, they look cheap, the guy says 90 euros as he pulls them from the back of his van, he has lots of customers, business is good when the weather gets bad, I pay the 90 and put them on, tags still hanging out the back I later find out back at the camper. Highway to Hell blaring and we are off. The first climb is a soft grade on a paved road, would normally be perfect but water was flowing over it and every bike had a rooster tail, we were getting soaked, and cold. The fingers in my shell gloves are filling with water, I had to keep lifting them up to drain them out the cuff, my legs are killing me just to keep up, maybe I did not have enough water after the previous day's race, maybe I am just beating the crap out of them. We head up what looks like a canyon/rock quarry, but it is a nature preserve, the Dolomites are crumbling and every gully has a flow of sand extending down to the valley. The road is granny gear steep, and deep gravel except for some discontinuous packed pathways, which every rider wants to be on, we crawl up the switchbacks in single file tire on tire, 1100 riders, it is quite a sight. I have to lift my butt from the seat once in a while just to let some blood in. My core feels warm but my hands and feet are freezing, new pants are great. We get to the top and it is snowing, I can't wait to get down, I want to get through this and get home to my wife Kathy. The descent is steep switchbacks for the first 2000', very rocky and lots of gravel, again there is a groove packed by previous bikers, I need to move fast or other riders want to overtake me and that is dangerous, stay in the groove and life is good and you can really fly, get off the groove and things get bad fast. I can't feel my fingers but they are still taking orders from my brain, and the brakes work, I pump my fingers and sometimes let the handlebars vibrate in a loosened grip, I need to get them back and I need to keep going. It stops snowing and the wind is down, I don't feel the chill over my body, and after 30 minutes I start to get the fingers back, they ache, life is getting better. We hit some double track for the remainder of the descent down to the first feeding station where we are informed that the stage will be ending at the second feeding station because of snow at elevation; I am very relieved because it was 700' higher than the first. There is a fast gravel road and some muddy single track with roots down to Cortina, traffic is backed up all around, police are directing and the bikers fly through, just great. The final 1700' climb starts as a trail up a ski area of course, Peter is walking and pushes me once in a while, it really take the edge off, we hit a road and I get organized behind Peter and we pass a lot of bikes on the final soft climb to the finish, 3 hours 22 minutes. We are just happy to be safe and done for the day. Later we find out we finished 16th in our category, and moved up to 20^th overall…. Yea baby the pain paid off….

hier kommt also ein lebenszeichen. die gestrige etappe wurde ja nach 47km und 2000hm abgebrochen, da die bedingungen zu schlecht waren. schnee, regen, kälte. sehr schade, denn es wäre noch eine laaaaange trailabfahrt gekommen, an der sicherlich noch einiges drin gewesen wäre. seis drum. wir haben uns dennoch wacker geschlagen. hendrik/roman als 11. steve/peter als 16. und ricci/franz als 18.

heute ist super wetter! es ist zwar noch kalt, aber DIE SONNE SCHEINT!!!

heute über 3100hm und über 70km.

nobbe ist übrigends jetzt wohl auch wieder online..... ggf schreibt der ja auch wieder mal was .... :-)

I am in this crazy race again, 8 days across the Alps on a mountain bike with my friend Roman Eder and his friends Henrik, Norbert, Franz, and Ricci (the entire HappyChain team). Here is a recap of the last 3 days. Please forward to anyone you think might be interested, I could not take my computer with me and threw this list together quick. See you soon.

Stage 1 Mittenwald -to- Weerberg 57 miles, 8800 feet ascent, easy day to start!

Highway to Hell is blasting from the loud speakers in the small German town of Mittenwald, the 2011 TransApl is started, we are close to dead last, my constitution is 7 hours behind schedule even with a kick start from two dbl expresso's. We snake through the town and the temporary city of vendors to the cheers of thousands of people, locals, vendors, support people, campers..... my heart rate is over 160, lots of excitement. We hit 4 miles of gravel road before the climb, and easily move up through the crowd, people back this far are not very serious, just finishing the 8 days, 400 miles, and 70000 vertical is enough , all the better. The climb is a 3000' rocky double track, we continue to move up through the crowd, there are clusters of riders with clear road in between, we move slowly from group to group. The decent is a fast gravel road, my descending is getting better, I was only passed by a few crazies...30 minutes of smooth gravel switchback fun... hit the bottom and the first feeding station, passed another 100 riders there, just fill with water and go, started the next 3500' climb, rocky double track with switchbacks all the way. Switchbacks stacked up over our heads, up the valley wall as far as the eye can see, bikers going up, the guys near the front look like ants. The scenery is unbelievable, we are in the alps crossing the border between Germany and Austria …"The Hills Are Alive…." that sort of scenery. The sound of cow bells constantly break the silence, these things are more like billy goats the way they move on the steep green slopes, with the occasional cow standing half in the road chewing its cud and observing the suffering. The next descent is treacherous, very steep, very loose with lots of cliffs, people were standing by the cliffs warning you away. I have never spent so much time with stomach on the seat, hanging my butt over the rear wheel. 40k to go, Lots of undulating gravel bike paths all the way to Weerberg, with groups of bikes working the draft. This is a lot of fun, and we were moving faster than I should have, jumping between groups takes a lot of work. Was cooked when we got to the final 1500' climb to the finish, and my partner Peter pushed me a few times, although I will never admit it again. Pushing or pulling your partner is all legal in the Transalp. We hit the finish 5 hours 14 minutes, and 550 riders behind us, 24th place in the "Grand Masters" division, old guys, out of about 50. Free food was everywhere, but I was not hungry, at least I am not puking.... yet, it took a few minutes and I puked anyway, Bode Miller says it's not a workout unless you have a gut wrenching puke. Glad we had an easy day to start. Will try to do better tomorrow.

2 Weerberg-Mayrhofen 41 miles, 9550 feet accent

I can't remember much to say, it's a blur now with the other days, 3 ascents, 2500', 4000', 3000', lots of very high alpine scenery, the last climb was a ski area, we came into town, but of course we have to climb the ski area first. 5 hours and 20 minutes, 24^th place in the Grand Masters division again. Felt sick, at least I didn't puke. Man I need to do something to last longer…. Roman to the rescue tomorrow. Should be another easy day tomorrow.

3 Mayrhofen(Austria)-Brixen(Italy) 56 miles, 7100 feet

The gray morning light was coming through the camper window, I pulled out my ear plugs (there is an industrial size canister of earplugs at the camper entrance, Norbert is infamous, Norbert put them there, they get a lot of laughs too, people can relate) the rain was pounding on the camper roof, I should have left them in for a few more moments of ignorance. Roman was sitting in bed looking at the weather forecast on the internet, rain all day, rain all day where we are going, it is snowing above 3000m, and we are going to about 8000 feet. I didn't bring any leg warmers, booties, and my jacket was just a thin wind breaker, Roman looked at me later and said is that all you have... Ya I said! Roman pulled out a bunch of extra stuff, he is a bit of a gear head, and played lets show the stupid American how to dress in the Alps for excursions above 7000 feet when weather has moved in. Thank you Roman you saved my life. Standing in the rain at the start, a woman points to a break in the clouds and says "snow", the snow is on the mountains well below 3000m. Highway to hell blasting we head out of town up a narrow canyon with vertical rock walls, water is pouring in everywhere. The first and only main climb is a steady 5440 feet, first paved and then lots of dirt, now moose-like mud single track. These guys do not ride muddy single track, I do a lot of passing even though it is tight, I need to use my "Skidmore" skills because I don't have the legs a lot of these riders do. We eventually climb into a box canyon, snow is everywhere except on the wet muddy trail, the terrain is like the top of mount Marcy, mostly rock and a little grass, of course... cows everywhere. In the distance I can see a steady exodus of riders on a steady slope up the canyon wall. Lots of real rocky climbing, passed a lot of riders was great. The new carbo regiment that Roman put me on is working great, 20 grams every 1/2 hour, like GU but thinner and way easier to swallow. There are a few hikers dressed for winter hiking in the Adirondacks. The descent is steep rocks and fast switchbacks, it's freezing, raining and blowing like hell, then starts to hail (pea size), my glasses are covered with water drops and mud, have to shift my head to see, can't slow down or someone will try to pass from the back, very dangerous at these speeds, I can't even come close to pedaling my highest gear. 5000 feet we plunge to the valley below. It is much warmer when we hit the valley, unzip the jacket and get some cooling. Only 40 miles to go, some road, single track, bike paths, pieced together in a fun flowing way, all directed by Italian police in uniform. We are 6 miles from town on a very twisty bike path going like mad, we pass two racers, with a few more on our butt, take a hard right sweeping turn and the group just settles in and the path takes a 90 degree turn to the left, my partner locks it up, I am braking hard but can't stop and hit him broad side, and everyone behind me piles up on top of us, lots of cursing, they all make a quick check (like 5 seconds maybe) and take off. We look around for a few seconds and jump back to it. We snake into the town of Brixen, right into the town square, beautiful Italian architecture everywhere, the sun is out, blond Italian girls handing out pastry, scenery is great, we are in northern Italy after all, everybody is fit and in style (the BikeMag style guy can tell you about Italians and style). We moved up to 21st place in the Grand Masters division... Yippie!, that carbo regiment really worked, I am hungry now, was a great day, life is good. Time for a beer, the Germans brought lots of beer, NA of course... but still great.

Tomorrow things get notched up a bit, 43 miles and 11500 feet of climbing.

Königsetappe

Das war sie also.. die Königsetappe. Schön war sie. Da war wirklich alles
drin, was so eine Transalp etabbe brauch. Lange Aufstiege, lange Abfahrten,
steile Auffahrten, Trails bergab... wirklich super. Und das alles mit super
Dolomiten Panorama. Klasse wars!

Wir (Hendrik und Roman) sind heute gefühlt den MTB Weltrekord gefahren. Da
hat echt alles gepasst. Im Ziel dachten wir, dass wir wohl schon in den
Top-10 wären.... nix wars... die anderen alten Säcke lassen es eben auch
krachen. 12 Platz heute. Aber 4:51 auf 72km mit 3500hm in diesem Gelände
waren eigentlich echt nicht schlecht. Wir sind zumindest sehr zufrieden.

Franz und Ricci sind mit 6:09 auch ein super Rennen gefahren und mit
Tagesplatz 14 haben sie wieder Ihren Startplatz im Block B zurückerobert -
jawohl .. so gehört es sich!

Steve und Peter sind mit 6:22 auf den 23. Tagesplatz gefahren, wobei sich
Peter verfahren hatte.... deshalb bleibt man bei seinem Partner ;-)

Annette und Utz haben wohl heute besonders gut gefrühstückt. Klasse Rennen,
klasse Zeit, klasse Platzierung. Heute 36. Platz in 6:35 und damit gesamt
auf Platz 41 verbessert.

Jetzt ist erstmal bissle Pause angesagt.....

Sooooo...nun scheine ich wieder online zu sein....kaum schreibt man die Blogadresse richtig...schon gehts :-)

Inzwischen sind wir, die Servicecrews von mittlerweile vier Teams, an einem Campingplatz angekommen. Der Camping im Zielbereich nimmt keine "Transalpler", Wildcampen oder einfach irgendwo die Nacht über hinzustellen ist bei Höchststtafe verboten...so sind wir nun etwa 13km vom Ziel weg. Die Barbara ist los mit dem Camper um die Jungs aufzusammeln und ich halte hier die Stellung...

Heute morgen haben wir dann auch noch Kirsten mit ihrem Camper verloren...und anscheinend hat sie kein Handy...naja, ich hoffe Barbara kann sie am Ziel auflesen...

heute ist schon um 9:00 start, so wie auch die nächsten tage.

das ist schon wirklich eine super kulisse mit blick auf das karwendel gebirge.

heute gehts über 3000hm und 70km nach mayrhofen im zillertal. viel rauf und runter, zum glück wenig eben.... das "rennradgeblogggger" mögen wir ja nicht sehr.

das wetter ist heute noch super, aber die sonne sticht schon ganz schön.

The Transalp routes are classified as, asphalt road, cycle path, gravel road, dirt road, single track, and “Carry”… in 2005 I thought “I don’t carry my bike”… well I did find out what they mean by “carry”….. I wonder if this is part of the route this year…. I will let you know….Picture by Roman….
